Preface
While watching the news one evening in 2017, I heard President Donald J. Trump speaking to supporters in Miami, Florida. He demanded that Cuba “… return the fugitives from American justice, including the return of the cop-killer Joanne Chesimard.”
The crowd roared with approval. He didn’t explain anything else. Who was Joanne Chesimard? What was the story? What was I missing?

To the computer. J-o-a-n-n-e <space> C-h-e-s-i-m-a-r-d <enter>. The search result page yielded: “Assata Olugbala Shakur, married name, Joanne Chesimard, is an American political activist who was a member of ...” (ellipsis original)

Wait … what? Shakur? Political activist? Why was Trump calling for the apprehension of a political activist? What’s going on? Was Trump as crazy as they said?

Thus began a multi-year journey to discover the truth. As a trial and appellate attorney who had dedicated a thirty-year career to criminal law, serving both the government and minority defendants, I felt I could get to the bottom of things objectively. I’d represented the “worst” offenders in criminal courtrooms. I’d evaluated cases and written a number of successful appeals which resulted in lengthy prison sentences for black and minority convicts being reversed and set aside. I’d sued the government and police departments in civil court for their misdeeds. If anyone could unravel the facts, I thought could.
For years, there was no intention of writing a book. I just needed to know for myself. But, I was sucked into a black hole. At every corner, the Chesimard saga got more interesting, and the research became more involved. Every stone which was upended revealed two more that needed to be looked under. After a while there was so much information I had to start writing in order to organize my thoughts – and thus, this book was born.
Chesimard’s story and that of her army was almost not believable. The radically violent era of the 1970’s was as fascinating as it was terrifying. On top of everything else, there were people across America and around the world defending her and saying the woman was a hero despite a trial and murder conviction for killing a state trooper.

There was a lot to unpack and only two books which dealt exclusively with Chesimard. Neither work gave a comprehensive analysis of her life, nor mentioned the most important details of her exploits. One of the books was written by Chesimard herself, as “Assata Shakur,” and proved to be rather fanciful.

After years of research and analysis, the saga of Joanne Chesimard is comprehensively told here for the first time. My approach was down the middle and without bias. However, the results of my labor are not down the middle or neutral. As the title clearly suggests, this book condemns Chesimard and anyone who supports her. In my view, there is no other objective outcome.

My findings and conclusions are not sugar-coated or white-washed. Chesimard is a killer and a terrorist. Praising her or holding her up as some sort of an icon seems crazy, and, well … outrageous!

Those who believe that corruption in the criminal justice system is omnipresent, that America is systemically and invariably racist (and who believe O.J. Simpson was innocent) will not like this book. It doesn’t fit that narrative, as they say. That’s okay.

Those who believe in law-and-order and truth-and-justice will find this book a refreshing affirmation. That was not my intention. Nonetheless, this category of reader will find solace in the notion that in our topsy-turvy world, where sometimes up-is-down and down-is-up, the truth can still be found and not everyone has gone mad.
